Coach Leo is a French AI running coach that builds your plan from your Strava history and that you can talk to in the app, on the web, over Telegram and inside ChatGPT and Claude. It has a free tier, and the paid tier costs $12.99 a month or $79.99 a year. For many runners it's a good choice, and this piece isn't trying to convince you otherwise.
But some people try Leo and keep looking. The reasons tend to be quite specific.
(Details about Coach Leo are from coachleo.ai in September 2026. Features and prices change.)
Why people keep looking
The most common one is the watch. Leo pulls from Strava, Suunto, Polar, Apple Health and Health Connect. Garmin and Coros were listed as coming when we read the site, so if you own a Garmin and don't use Strava, you're outside until that lands.
Then there's the cadence. The plan adapts weekly, to how you've felt and how sessions went. If you want a bad night to change today's session the same morning, you're looking for a different setup.
Some want the coach to take the initiative. Leo answers when you write. We found no mention of it getting in touch on its own after a run or before a hard one.
And the language. Leo is in English and French.
What Coach Leo does well
Leo is liked for a reason, and it deserves a proper look before we get to the gaps.
The memory is what gets mentioned most. Leo keeps what you've told it and refers back to it later, and the plan is built from your whole Strava history rather than from scratch. That is exactly how a coach should work, and not every app in the category manages it.
The channels are unique. You can message the coach from Telegram, and on the paid tier you reach it inside ChatGPT, Claude and Mistral through an MCP connection. If you live in ChatGPT all day anyway, that's one app fewer to open.
The free tier needs no card, and the site promises a fourteen-day money-back guarantee on the paid tier. Trail is covered up to 55 km.
If you want a coach with memory that you reach where you already are, and you're on Strava, there aren't many reasons to look elsewhere.
Where it stops
Adaptation is weekly. What happened last night or on this morning's run waits for the next replan, unless you write and ask for a change.
Watch support is limited until Garmin and Coros are in place. If you're reading this later it may be solved, so check the site.
The ChatGPT and Claude connection sits on the paid tier. On the free tier it's the app and the web.
No Swedish. And $12.99 is a fair bit above our $8.49.

Coach Fartlek as an alternative
Coach Fartlek is our own app, so expect some bias. It's built for runners chasing a goal between 5K and the marathon who want a coach that doesn't just answer but also gets in touch.
The coach writes after every synced run, before hard sessions and when HRV or resting heart rate dips. The plan is recalculated every week, after every synced run and every morning when recovery is checked, not only on Sunday. Since version 3.0 it estimates five performance factors from your data and names the one limiting you for your race.
Garmin, Coros, Polar and Suunto work today, through Intervals.icu. That is one extra step compared with Leo's Strava connection, and without a watch Coach Fartlek isn't the right app for you. The app is in English and Swedish.
What Leo has that we lack should be said plainly too. Strava isn't read directly, there's no Telegram channel, and the coach can't be reached inside ChatGPT or Claude today.
Pro costs $8.49 a month, and you get the whole coach free for seven days from your first plan. The tiers are on the pricing page.
Other alternatives worth knowing
Running Genie has a chat that's free to use, builds on Strava data and covers ultra. If you want to try a chat coach without paying, it's the simplest route.
Ranner connects the watch directly with no hub in between and adjusts the plan day by day, in six languages. We've written about Ranner alternatives.
Runna is the biggest app in the category, plan-led and with pace guidance on the watch. More in our piece on Runna alternatives.
